A note from Phyllis:

Joe and I are both educators. Joe is a retired Science teacher who taught for over 34 years, his last school Edward R.Murrow H.S. I am still teaching after spending 11 years teaching first grade at the Rabbi Harry Halpern Day School in East Midwood Jewish Center, 15 years in a vocational rehabilitation Program for Learning Disabled young adults, followed by these last 28 years at Magen David Yeshiva as a reading specialist.

We have three children, five grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. Our children attended the Rabbi Harry Halpern Day School, and our son’s children attended the same school, followed by the Solomon Schechter H.S. and Heschel H.S. All of our children and grandchildren have spent time in Israel in various programs and working as volunteers.

Our families left a legacy of commitment to Jewish causes, and most especially to Israel.Joe’s father was a regular attendant of services at the Flatbush Jewish Center on Ocean Parkway, and my father was one of the founders of the kings Highway Jewish Center. My brother fought in Israel during the war of independence, graduated from the Hebrew University, and subsequently made aliyah in 1972 with 5 children, all of whom reside in Israel. We have been fortunate to have visited Israel consistently over the years,

Joe and I have been members of the East Midwood Jewish Center for over 60 years, involved as chairpersons of fundraising events and attending educational programs offered over the years.Joe has been a member of the Bd. of Trustees and was instrumental in helping East Midwood Jewish Center attain Landmark status.

This year is special. Our family wanted to celebrate our 70th wedding anniversary April 11, but we declined as they made a beautiful surprise 90th birthday party for me this past summer. Nothing could be more appropriate than our attending this Israel Bond breakfast as our celebration of our 70th anniversary on the same day as we celebrate Israel’s 70 th anniversary celebrating their independence. My favorite saying has been: Israel gained her independence in 1948, and Joe lost his independence in 1948 by marrying me! We are truly blessed!
