NightShul, EMJC’s innovative adult learnng program will kick off 2017 on Thursday, January 12 with a series of three lectures on The Rise of Modern Ethical Kosher Eating taught by Sara Shamirah Chandler, Team Leader, Jewish Initiative for Animals, a project of Farm Forward.

The Rise of Modern Ethical Kosher Eating

What responsibilities do we have to protect the animals people eat? What can ancient Jewish teachings show us about how to approach modern day factory farming systems that produce the majority of animal products consumed in North America? Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, meat reductionist, or are curious about what you can do to end farm animal suffering, this workshop is for you.

Sarah Shamirah Chandler is the C.C.O. (Chief Compassion Officer) and team leader for the Jewish Initiative for Animals (JIFA), a project of Farm Forward, where she works to support institutions to establish meaningful food policies rooted in Jewish ethics and animal welfare. She recently relocated to Brooklyn after five years as the Director of Earth Based Spiritual Practice for Hazon’s Adamah Farm and teaches, writes and consults on a national level on issues related to Judaism, the environment, mindfulness, food values, and farming.

Class begins at 8:00 pm. The fee of $35 for the series (January 12, 19, 26) includes complimentary wine and cheese at 7:00 pm. Email nightshul@emjc.org or call the office at 718.338.3800 to reserve your space.
