An Evening of Ladino Music

Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jewry, developed a rich folk music tradition. Born in Spain and carried throughout the world following the expulsion of 1492, that music found a new home at the East Midwood Jewish Center on Saturday evening, November 18th, as Club Oasis presented S'huenyos de Espanya An Evening of Ladino Music.

Capping off a year that has seen national and state recognition bestowed upon the East Midwood Jewish Center for its contribution to Jewish culture and history, and the commencement of a rehabilitation and restoration program of unprecedented proportions, the Center's 83rd annual Journal Dinner on June 3, 2007 will honor persons who epitomize the Center's enduring strength - Phyllis and Joe Rothstein, Toby Sanchez, and Cantor Sam Levine.

Latke Bake-Off 2007!

Our first annual latke bake-off was a blast, with some strong, friendly competition from every corner. We had beet latkes, Park Slope Jewish Center challengers, and one participant so secretive about her recipe that she hid her spices in mislabeled jars! Photos (1-40): Danielle Sucher

Square Dance

What would soon become known as the Blizzard of 2006 had just begun. The temperature was dropping, snow was falling, the wind was picking up, and driving was becoming hazardous. But none of that seemed to matter for the dozens who turned out for the East Midwood Jewish Center/Our Lady of Refuge Interfaith Square Dance, Saturday evening, February 11th, where warm smiles, sunny dispositions, and good cheer filled the Grand Ballroom.

Led by Don and Dot Coy, professional square dance callers for over 30 years, we quickly learned a variety of square dances, line dances, and reels. By the end of the evening everyone was able to allemande left and right, pass through, promenade, do-se-do, do a left or right-hand star, right-left-grand, and more, all in time with a bouncy blend of down-home country and bluegrass music.

Twilight Dinner - Honoring Sally Hipscher

Sisterhood placed a bold exclamation point on a highly successful program year at its first-ever Twilight Loyalty Dinner on June 8th.

Sisterhood pride filled the room at the early evening affair, where over 120 men and women gathered to salute the Centers premier fundraising affiliate and pay tribute to one of its most dynamic, charismatic, and compassionate members, Sally Hipscher. As would be expected for any event Sally is involved in, the evening was one of friendship, love, laughs, some tears, music, and, of course, lots of dancing!

From Sukkot To Simchat
