June, Nature, And God: The Perfect Triad

By Rabbi Alvin Kass

While the traffic roars, the factories fume, and human beings go about committing an endless series of follies, nature has been going about her business quietly, without fanfare, but always intelligently and with a sense of purpose. The result is June - one of the greatest miracles of this miracle-filled universe.

Barely a couple of months ago all was barren, yet now the flower buds are bursting forth in a glorious Technicolor panorama. The trees are filled with fresh green leaves, and the green grass provides a most appropriate background for the flowers, the bushes, and the trees. Especially for us who live in the city amidst an ever-present abundance of stone and asphalt, the natural beauty of June is a longed-for relief.

Not only does June bring aesthetic exaltation, but the green leaves of spring constitute an indispensable ingredient for the perpetuation of life. For they contain chlorophyll which possesses the capacity to transform the air, water, and sunlight into the sugars and starches which give plants the nourishment they need to stay alive. Since all life on this planet ultimately depends upon plant life, you might say that without the green leaf this Earth would be totally dead.

All of this is quite reassuring, for so often we have to turn to nature for the wisdom, the beauty, and the purpose that are too frequently lacking in human life. Nature would never be guilty of the stupidity, confusion, and hypocrisy of what passes for our national energy policy or non-policy depending on your point of view. Moreover, nature never breaks her own laws. Natural laws are absolute, unerring, and operate without exception. They suggest a transcendental reality and intelligence of infinite proportions which is the Source and Creator of our world and all that is contained therein.

The ultimate and irrefutable proof of the existence of God is the grandeur and magnificence of June. It is simply inconceivable and beyond the wildest speculations of the imagination to think that June could be an accident, a regularly occurring concatenation of certain chemicals and gasses. People say and do stupid things and make fools out of themselves. But none can make a fool out of nature.

June is part of nature. Nature is part of God. Glory be to God!
