The race has gained national attention, much of it breathless at the prospect of a democratic socialist mayor, and a Muslim one at that, running the country’s largest city. The Jewish community has had its own set of concerns at the prospect of a Mayor Mamdani. If he is elected, he will be the first non-Zionist in that position in the modern era. His stances on Israel and Zionism have caused much hand-wringing among a large swath of the Jewish population. And at a time of increasing antisemitism in the city and around the world, it’s no surprise that people are jittery.
